Focus - The 3 Myths

Rethinking Focus in Cricket: It’s Not What You Think

When we talk about high performance in cricket, “focus” is a word that gets thrown around a lot. But what if most of us have misunderstood what it actually means?

At HeadStance, we work with one clear belief: mental skills are trainable — just like footwork, timing, or swing. And focus is one of the most misunderstood mental skills in cricket.

Let’s break down a few common myths:

Myth #1: Focus means having no distractions.

It doesn’t.

Distractions are inevitable — the key is not eliminating them, but managing them.
The best players learn how to notice a distraction and gently return to the moment. That’s real focus.

Whether it’s crowd noise, a sledging opponent, or your own thoughts — staying present is about coming back, not never drifting.

Myth #2: You need to focus the whole innings.

That’s a fast track to mental fatigue.

The reality is: no one — not even the greats — stays “on” 100% of the time.

Elite players learn to turn on just before the delivery and switch off after. This rhythm of switching in and out is what allows them to last through long spells or innings.

It’s not about constant concentration — it’s about controlled resets.

Myth #3: Resets are instinctive.

They’re not. Resets are a skill. And like any skill — they can be trained.

At HeadStance, our Focus Sessions are designed to help cricketers build this exact ability:

  • Learning how to return to the present moment

  • Practicing the mental rhythm of “switching on and off”

  • Building awareness between deliveries

These sessions are short, guided, and cricket-specific — designed to be used in your weekly routine, or even on game day.

Final Thought

The mental game isn’t just about being tough. It’s about training your attention with the same care you give to your technique.

Focus isn’t about perfection. It’s about resetting.

And that’s what HeadStance is here to help you master.
